INNOVADE: INNOVAtive DEmocracy Through Digitalisation

Überblick

INNOVADE is an international, interdisciplinary, three-year Horizon Europe EU research project investigating digital democracy. The eleven participating teams come from the fields of Media and Communication Studies, Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Computer Science, Security Studies, Educational Research, and Legal Studies.

The aim of INNOVADE is to better understand and promote digital democracy. Prof Christian Fuchs is Principal Investigator (PI) of one of the INNOVADE research teams. In the INNOVADE project, the research of the Paderborn University team, which is based in Media and Communication Studies, focuses on theories of democracy, theories of digital democracy and social research on digital democracy.

The INNOVADE project is an interplay of social science research and political research with technology development. The resulting Digital Democracy App will be tested in two municipalities and the local use of the app in these local communities will be scientifically analysed. The two municipalities are also participating as project partners, enabling the transfer of the project’s academic findings on digital democracy to society. These are Geel, a town in the north-east of Belgium with around 40,000 inhabitants, and San Martín de la Vega, a municipality with around 20,000 inhabitants near Madrid in Spain. Pilot studies are carried out in these two local communities.

The role of the Paderborn University research team led by Prof. Christian Fuchs is to conduct foundational theoretical research and empirical social research about digital democracy.
