CV

The CV should be written in tabular form (max. 2 pages). In addition to personal details, it may be advisable to include details of special interests, activities in organisations, etc. You do not need to enclose copies of school, work or internship certificates etc.

The document must be in German and at least one of the languages of instruction at the university of your choice. For example, if you wish to apply for one partner university with English as the language of instruction and another partner university with Spanish as the language of instruction, the document must be submitted in German, English and Spanish.

Motivation letter

The letter of motivation should not exceed two pages. If you are applying for several universities in one application round, you should describe your reasons for the planned semester abroad in a general section. Please describe what you have focussed on in your studies so far and how you would like to organise your studies abroad. In a further section, briefly describe the universities you have chosen. You should proceed according to your prioritisation.

The document must be in German and one of the languages of instruction at the university(ies) of your choice. For example, if you would like to apply for one partner university with English as the language of instruction and another partner university with Spanish as the language of instruction, the document must be submitted in German, English and Spanish.

ToR

If you are unable to print out your transcript of records directly from PAUL, you can request a certificate from the Central Examination Office confirming the examinations you have completed and registered for. In many degree programmes, you can request this certificate by e-mail from the Central Examination Office - it will then be made available for you to download from PAUL. The document is valid without a signature.

For internal applications to Paderborn University, no certificate of achievement in the language of instruction is required.

Important for Master's students who have already completed their Bachelor's degree at the time of application: In addition to your transcript of records, please enclose your Bachelor's certificate with your application documents.

Language certificate

+++ The following regulations apply to UPB's internal application process. The partner universities may require a different language certificate for their own registration process before the start of the semester abroad. Information on this can be found on the partner websites. Please take care of this in good time! +++

For the internal application process at UPB you can provide proof of language proficiency either via a recognised language certificate (accepted are TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, DELE, DELF/DALF, UNIcert®) or via the DAAD language certificate. Other forms of certificates or attestations (e.g. the Abitur certificate) are not recognised for the application.

The DAAD language certificate must not be older than 2 years at the time of application. Please refer to the certificates themselves for the validity of the other certificates.

DAAD language certificate:

Please contact the Centre for Language Teaching for information on the various ways to obtain a DAAD language certificate. Students who are unable to submit a complete DAAD language certificate by the application deadline due to time constraints, please upload the results of the pre-assessment (computer-based part) for the DAAD language certificate. The DAAD language certificate must then be available for the selection interview at the latest. Submit it to the respective Departmental Coordinator at the faculty. The International Office will no longer accept application documents after the deadline.

Language of instruction and language level:

Information on the possible languages of instruction and the language level required by the respective partner university can be found in our partner university portal (detailed view of the individual contracts). If you select different languages of instruction for different mobility requests in the online application, you must provide proof of language proficiency for all languages.

Exceptions for the UPB internal application process - when no language certificate needs to be submitted:

We strongly recommend that you still obtain an official language certificate, as this is usually required during the registration process at the partner universities.

  1. Native speakers:
If the language of instruction is your native language, you do not need to submit a language certificate.
  2. Romance studies students:
There is a special rule for Romance studies students: you do not need to submit a language certificate for the internal application to Paderborn University; a transcript of records (including the practical language modules) is sufficient.
  3. English/American Studies students:
The following rule applies to English/American Studies students: If your transcript of records shows that you have successfully completed the CLC Intermediate course, you do not need to submit a language certificate for the internal application to Paderborn University. If the language certificate cannot be provided via the transcript of records under the above conditions, a DAAD language certificate (or comparable language certificate) must be submitted.
  4. IBS students:
IBS students can have the DAAD language certificate issued by language lecturers once they have completed the English I and II module examinations. Those who are not yet able to attach the certificate because the required exam is not written until the end of this semester can submit their language certificate to the faculty or at the selection interview. Please upload a short explanation in the appropriate place in the application documents.
