Digital Divide among students through artificial intelligence

Overview

At the latest with ChatGPT, large language models and tools based on them (AI tools) have found their way into universities. Students use AI tools for brainstorming, writing, proofreading and research. As with the introduction of other information and communication technologies (ICT), it is to be expected that there will be differences in the use, acceptance, knowledge and competence of AI tools that are strongly related to social and cultural factors. The concept of the digital divide is used to explain these differences. Based on a quantitative survey, we analyse the extent to which access to AI and knowledge and skills in using AI depend on social factors.
