German-Italian Cooperation in the Humanities and Social Sciences / Cooperazione italo-tedesca nel campo delle scienze umane e sociali

Overview

The comparative study of compositional strategies is a great challenge for music historiography, particularly for philology. Indeed, on the one hand, studies on the creative process have always been devoted to the study of individual composers; on the other hand, the traditions of national philological schools-particularly genetische Textkritik in Germany and creative process studies in Italy-have developed within completely different editorial, disciplinary, and terminological contexts. In light of this fragmented framework and the history of the discipline, determined primarily by the development of individual national schools, the exchange format of German-Italian conversations seems best suited to address the problem. In direct conversation, researchers inform each other about existing classifications and will jointly identify overlapping and incompatible existing terminology. Another key aspect offered by the format of Italo-German conversations, essential to the development of the proposed project, is multilingualism. A common terminology, in fact, probably needs to be thought of as multilingual from the outset. The final phase of the interviews will be then devoted to the drafting of a document that will be intended as a joint statement of intent and will be made available to the scientific community as a future reference point. In this sense, the project aims to contribute to the creation of a sustainable network of musicologists who, in the long term, will be able to work together to reconstruct a central part of European cultural history looking far beyond the boundaries of isolated 'composer philologies‘.
