Coaching at School

Overview

Student teachers in educational science are trained in the basics of communication and counseling and regularly hold coaching sessions with pupils from various partner schools. In these discussions, the focus is on providing individual advice to pupils on school challenges (e.g. career guidance or the development of personal learning strategies). Appreciation and understanding are two essential basic attitudes that should prevail throughout the conversation.

The service learning project aims to support pupils in dealing with individual challenges in their everyday school life so that, for example, their self-organization or school performance improves. In student-centered coaching sessions, they are given the opportunity to take a close look at their own situation and develop strategies for solving these challenges. The project supports students in key competencies (such as communication, counseling and reflection skills) as prospective teachers. In addition, they gain an insight into everyday school life and thus gain a perspective on the difficulties of pupils in school areas such as skills development and learning. The project also aims to support teachers. Teachers involved in the project describe the effect of regular coaching sessions as a noticeable change in pupils' behavior with regard to their self-reflection and problem-solving skills. In this way, coaching can become a support for teachers in everyday teaching situations.
