With the NRW Return Programme, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia supports young researchers who have ventured abroad from Germany and now wish to return to NRW. A maximum of six grants of up to 1.25 million euros each are awarded annually for five years to establish a junior research group. Paderborn University, together with physicist Jun. Prof. Dr Nicholas A. Güsken, was successful and received one of the grants.

From April, Prof. Güsken will use the funds to set up a group in experimental physics as a tenure-track junior professor, focussing on quantum photonics and optoelectronics. The main focus will be on the manipulation of quantum emitters, active light-matter interaction and research into active component interfaces in photonic integrated circuits and networks. Tenure-track professorships are sponsored by the federal and state governments and automatically lead to a lifetime professorship after a maximum of five years, subject to a positive assessment by the university.

The new group will be part of both the Institute for Photonic Quantum Systems (PhoQS) and the "Center for Optoelectronics and Photonics Paderborn(CeOPP)". Junior Professor Güsken is looking forward to working with his new colleagues: "Paderborn University is a place for top international research, especially in the field of photonic systems. I am very much looking forward to working with the excellent researchers on site and the open and collaborative approach of the PhoQS."

Prior to his appointment, Prof Güsken was a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University in the Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials. He studied at RWTH Aachen University and Sorbonne University in Paris. He received his doctorate from Imperial College London in 2020, for which he was also awarded the Imperial College Solid State Physics Thesis Prize 2020. After his doctoral dissertation, he headed a Research & Development team in a spin-off of ETH Zurich. He was also recently elected a member of the Young Academy of the National Academy of Sciences - Leopoldina and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
