The most important funding institution and central self-governing organisation for science and research in Germany, the German Research Foundation (DFG), published its Funding Atlas 2024 this week. This is the anniversary edition with news and longer-term statistics on third-party and core funding. The data for the years 2020 to 2022 show how universities and research institutions perform in various funding areas and how the German higher education and research system is funded overall. Paderborn University is represented in the rankings several times with some outstanding results.

In the field of universities with the highest DFG funding, Paderborn University ranks 18th nationwide with 29.2 million euros in engineering sciences. In relation to the number of professors in this field, the university even ranks 16th. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Mirko Schaper, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, is pleased about the continuing upward trend: "In recent years, we have continuously improved and have been able to record increasing figures for third-party funding. I am very pleased about this and also see it as confirmation of our research focus at the Faculty."

The departments with the highest approvals in the Engineering Sciences category include Computer Science, Systems and Electrical Engineering as well as Mechanical and Production Engineering. Prof Dr Jürgen Klüners, Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics, praised the scientists' achievements: "We are extremely pleased that we have done so well here. This is a great result that confirms the quality of our research."

Among the universities with the highest DFG funding in the humanities and social sciences, Paderborn University ranks 39th in the field of absolute DFG funding. Prof. Dr Dr Oliver Reis, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, commented: "We are proud of the recognition of our research achievements, which range from individual projects to cross-subject area and cross-faculty projects to large-scale collaborative projects." According to the report, Paderborn University is one of the "clear up-and-comers" here.

The Department of Economics has received a total of seven million euros in DFG funding. This puts Paderborn University in an outstanding sixth place in Germany in this area. ‘The Collaborative Research Centre 266 ‘Accounting for Transparency’ is the first SFB ever in its field. In addition, the researchers at our faculty are also involved in other CRCs and top projects. The particular strength of our faculty is therefore reflected both in excellent research achievements within the subject and in interdisciplinary cooperation,’ says Prof Dr Jens Müller, Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics.

Interdisciplinary Collaborative Research Centres and DFG Transregios are located at all faculties. In terms of content, they focus on corporate taxation, mechanical joinability in versatile process chains, geometry and visualisation theory as well as artificial intelligence and the further development of human-machine interaction. The cross-faculty discourse - often in close cooperation with industry - results in forward-looking projects that address pressing social challenges.

Prof Dr Johannes Blömer, Vice President for Research and Junior Academics at Paderborn University, states: "The good rankings are testament to the outstanding work of our academics and confirm the relevance of our research."
