Societal customs, rituals and festivals as intangible cultural heritage

Overview

The dissertation project uses the examples of Schützenwesen, the Rhenish Carnival and the Schwörtag tradition to investigate the "metacultural productions" (Kirshenblatt-Gimblett 2004) that accompany an application to and inscription onto the Federal Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Germany as well as the historical developments, transformations and formations that the included cultural phenomena have undergone. Furthermore, it will be analysed how the registered cultural phenomena are perceived by society and how the label of intangible cultural heritage is used strategically.
