Site Specific Sculpture – Room creates Art
Overview
June 29 to July 14: Site Specific Sculpture – Room creates Art
Students of Paderborn University present site-specific sculptures in and in relation to Raum für Kunst.
Site-specific sculpture is a term that increasingly emerged in the 1960s in the context of land art, installation art, environments and conceptual art. It refers to sculptural projects that are conceived at or for a specific location and includes artistic reactions to or interventions in a specific environment.
In a practical art course led by lecturer Svenja Langer, 14 students from Paderborn University have created site-specific sculptures in and in relation to the location of 'Raum für Kunst' in Paderborn, which will be presented in the exhibition hall of Raum für Kunst from June 29 to July 14.
Between numerous new glass buildings in the heart of Paderborn stands the old building of 'Raum für Kunst' - a studio and exhibition space in the building of the former Ostermann family steam bakery. The unconventional building stands out from its immediate surroundings with its architectural features, listed elements, the ravages of time and a number of traces of the artists who have been working and exhibiting there since 1991. The students were inspired by this unique location to develop site-specific sculptures and ultimately present them on site.
Due to the special nature of the location, the exhibition hall is anything but a conventional white cube and presents an exciting challenge. Curatorial rules quickly reach their limits here. A creative approach to interacting with art and space is presented.
The students cordially invite you to enter into a dialog with the results of their sculptural journey in and in relation to an extraordinary place.
The course and exhibition project is supported by the project fund “Wirken in die Region” of the University of Paderborn and the Cultural Office of the City of Paderborn.
