About Axel Berndt
Axel Berndt studied computer science and music at Otto-von-Guericke University in Magdeburg. From 2006 on, he did research and teaching in music informatics at the Department of Simulation and Graphics and got his PhD in 2011. From 2012 to 2015, he worked at Technische Universität Dresden, Faculty of Computer Science. From 2015 until 2023 Axel Berndt was a member of the Center of Music and Film Informatics in Detmold. Since 2023 he is a member of the Paderborn University, the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar Detmold/Paderborn, the Center for Music, Edition, Media and the KreativInstitut.OWL.
Music is designed time and the computer is an incredibly powerful design tool.
Research
Research Interests
Sound and music are omnipresent parts of our media culture. Today, creative work with them is enriched in many ways and made more productive by digital tools and data formats. Digital media enable completely new ways of accessing sound and music, even for non-experts. There is a lot of innovative potential in the overarching field of music informatics, which we explore while interfacing with other disciplines such as human-technology interaction, musicology, and application domains such as the games industry, organ building, and museum technology.

Additional Activities
Lehrveranstaltungen, Projekte, Praktika und Abschlussarbeiten beschäftigen sich mit Sound und Musik in den unterschiedlichsten medialen Kontexten und Anwendungsdomänen.
Outreach
Transfer ist in meinen Forschungsthemen bereits von vorn herein angelegt. Er passiert
- im unmittelbaren interdisziplinären Austausch mit Kolleginnen und Kollegen verschiedener Institutionen, wie der Technischen Hochschule OWL und der Hochschule für Musik Detmold,
- in der individuellen und gemeinsamen Anbahnung von Kooperationen, gezielt auch mit der Wirtschaft und Anwendungsdomänen für die eigene Forschung,
- im Aufgreifen von Forschungsfragen, die sich aus dem Austausch mit potentiellen Anwendungsdomänen ergeben,
- in der Aufbereitung der eigenen Forschungs- und Entwicklungsergebnisse über das Stadium von Proof-of-Concept-Prototypen und wissenschaftlichen Texten/Publikationen hinaus
