Paderborn University at Hannover Messe 2022

From 30 May to 2 June, under the umbrella of Paderborn University, researchers from the Direct Manufacturing Research Center (DMRC), Institute for Lightweight Design with Hybrid Systems (ILH), Competence Centre for Sustainable Energy Technology (KET) and SICP - Software Innovation Campus Paderborn will be showcasing innovative technologies and concepts for a sustainable future at Hannover Messe. One highlight on show will be the “New Mobility Paderborn” (NeMo) initiative, aimed at facilitating the flexible, resource-saving and networked transportation of people and goods. Paderborn University’s start-up centre “garage 33” will also be exhibiting, in the start-up area at the OWL joint stand.

Solutions for tomorrow’s mobility

Under the leadership of Paderborn University and its DMRC, ILH, KET and SICP research institutions, more than 70 network partners have joined forces for the ‘NeMo Paderborn’ initiative. As a state-of-the-art, interdisciplinary network and application centre, this joint initiative aims to interlink changes in transport policies with the energy transition. The participating network partners are working together to develop an ultra-innovative swarm-like, autonomous mobility system: Central hubs, in which individual low-cost, energy-efficient driving modules (cabs) join together to form a convoy, serve as mobility-energy interfaces. Shortly before reaching their individual destinations, the cabs separate from the convoy and travel on to their individual destination points. These destination points can be determined by the users themselves. The plan is for individual journeys to be made as and when required, without any interruptions or the need to change vehicles from the starting point to the desired destination, thereby creating an efficient, cost-effective rural-urban connection for work, home and leisure. With the emergence of new vehicle concepts and sustainable energy generation, the transportation of people and goods is becoming digital and autonomous. The NeMo Paderborn swarm concept is of interest to a multitude of municipalities, companies and partners in the region and beyond, as it facilitates the targeted steering of tourist flows, strengthens rail transport and improves quality of life by creating car-free residential areas.

Preliminary study and further innovative concepts at Hannover Messe

A cab will be available to examine on Paderborn University’s stand as part of a preliminary study. It is just one of the technologies that could be used in new forms of mobility. Other exhibits will showcase other examples of Paderborn University’s sustainable innovations – from alternative energy systems and their power electronics to lightweight materials and production processes and from 3D printing to digital processes for a more sustainable production cycle.

Anyone interested in attending Hannover Messe can purchase a free visitor ticket on the Hannover Messe site.
